Le nouveau coffret stéréo Ormandy/Philadelphia de Sony Classical est rempli d'œuvres familières et inconnues de pratiquement tous les compositeurs connus (et de nombreuses figures oubliées), traversant les siècles et couvrant l'éventail stylistique de Bach (les fils comme le père) à Beethoven, Berlioz, Borodin, Bartók et au-delà. Il serait impossible (et inutile) de les énumérer tous.
La nouvelle collection comprend de nombreuses premières de CD. Parmi elles, l'intégrale de l'enregistrement d'Ormandy en 1958 : L'enregistrement intégral par Ormandy en 1958 du Martyre de Saint Sébastien de Debussy avec la soprano Hilde Gueden et Vera Zorina comme narratrice ; la Messe en si mineur de Bach et le Requiem de Brahms de 1962 ; ainsi que des symphonies de Haydn et d'autres œuvres de Borodine, Glinka, Wagner, Poulenc, Casella et de compositeurs américains tels que Yardumian, Barati, Rochberg et Dello Joio.
En 1963, Ormandy et les Philadelphiens ont réalisé le premier enregistrement américain de la quatrième symphonie de Chostakovitch. Passant en revue la discographie stéréo d'Ormandy chez Columbia, le critique de ClassicsToday a récemment loué sa "voluptueuse" Shéhérazade, sa "remarquable Fantaisie de Vaughan Williams sur 'Greensleeves'", ses transcriptions de Bach ("Merveilleusement réalisées, elles mettent en évidence les dons d'Ormandy en tant qu'arrangeur de Bach après Stokowski, une part importante de son héritage") et son affinité particulière pour la musique russe, notamment "sa glorieuse Cinquième Symphonie et sa Sérénade pour cordes de Tchaïkovski, sa magnifique Deuxième Symphonie de Rachmaninov, et son classique Concerto pour violoncelle de Chostakovitch avec Rostropovitch couplé à une excellente Première Symphonie". Le compositeur lui-même a assisté à ces séances et a été ébloui par le chef et l'orchestre. Il s'agit là d'enregistrements incontournables. Ormandy était également connu de son vivant comme le meilleur accompagnateur de concertos, et ce couplage des concertos pour violon de Tchaïkovski et de Mendelssohn montre que sa collaboration cordiale avec Isaac Stern fonctionne au plus haut niveau".
